Welcome to the memorial page for

John William Maze

March 19, 1927 ~ January 21, 2014 (age 86) 86 Years Old
Mr. John William "J.W." Maze, 86, of Elizabeth City, NC, passed away Tuesday January 21, 2014.
Born at Salt Lick, KY on March 19, 1927, Mr. Maze was the son of the late Robert and Adah Maze and was the husband of Ruby Flannery Maze, whom he married on June 30, 1949. He was a World War II Navy veteran, serving in the Pacific Theater, a Kentucky Colonel and was a member of the Evangelical Methodist Church in Elizabeth City, NC.
Serving others was a lifelong joy for J.W.; in Elizabeth City, he served in the ARC food distribution ministry, and in the summer of 2012 he potted hundreds of tomato plants, which he gave to children as they passed through the Health Department Pediatric Clinic, as a small part of his larger dream of helping families feed themselves by learning to raise vegetables at home. He loved Jesus, and loved his church family at Evangelical Methodist Church. He leaves a legacy of love, loyalty, honor, courage, generosity, humor and service.
In addition to his wife of 64 years, he is survived by 2 daughters, Jennifer Brown of Elizabeth City, NC and Janie Horton of Atlanta, GA, 1 brother, Howard Maze of Kentucky, 13 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
Along with his parents, Mr. Maze was preceded in death by a daughter, Ruth Ann Gilbert, a brother, Ray Maze, and 2 sisters, Francis Massey and Katie Dublin.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday January 25, 2014 at 11:00 AM at Salt Lick Christian Church with Bob Hale officiating. Interment will follow in Polksville Cemetery with full military graveside honors being conducted by Mount Sterling American Legion Post #22.
Visitation will be from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM Friday January 24 at Powell Funeral Home in Salt Lick.
