Mark Kelly Barnum, 59, of 60 Railroad Street, Salt Lick, KY, passed away peacefully Saturday July 2, 2011 at St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead, KY.
Born February 12, 1952 in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, he was the son of the late Bruce and Lois Kelly Barnum and the beloved husband of the late Elizabeth Cumes Barnum.
Mark was a graduate of Southern Illinois University with a degree in Forestry and served 3 years in the United States Peace Corps in Guatemala where he worked with farmers to develop better agricultural methods and where he met his dear wife Elizabeth. After serving in the Peace Corps, he and Elizabeth moved to Kentucky and he worked for the U.S. Army Corps Of Engineers for 27 years, first at Buckhorn Lake and later in Salt Lick where he became Project Manager of Cave Run Lake.
Mark was a good friend to many and a devout Christian. His faith guided him throughout his life. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was a gifted story teller. His letters and tales will be sorely missed.
Survivors include a brother, Brian Barnum (Ann Vorlicky) of Minneapolis, MN, 2 sisters, Joyce Grudzien (Wally) of Glendale Heights, IL and Jennifer Davis (Bobby) of Hamlet, NC, sister-in-law Marie Barnum, several nieces and nephews and his special friends and caregivers in his final weeks, Roy and Debbie Madden of Richmond, KY.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Jeff Barnum.
A memorial service will be conducted Wednesday July 6, 2011 at 11:00 AM at the Salt Lick Christian Church. Visitation will be from 9:00 AM until service time Wednesday at the church. Powell Funeral Home will be caring for arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to "Jubileo", at P.O. Box 37, Salt Lick, KY 40371. "Jubileo" is a non-profit organization that provides education and healthcare services to the people of Elizabeth's hometown of Patzun, Guatemala.
