Florence Pauline Sorrell Alley, Pauline or Polly to friends and family, 92, of Cave Run Lake Road, Salt Lick, KY, passed away Thursday June 4, 2020 at her home.
Mrs. Alley was born January 13, 1928 at Pine Creek, West Virginia, a daughter of the late Chester and Emma Downs Sorrell. She grew up near the Omar, West Virginia coal mining camp where her father worked. She quit school at an early age to work in the Omar company store and then the Post Office. She later obtained a high school equivalency degree, and an associates degree from Morehead State College.
After college, Pauline worked as a typist and later a fingerprint file clerk for the FBI in Washington, DC. She met and married Ben Franklin Alley, Jr. (Junior) while caring for her mother in Salt Lick, KY, where her parents had retired. Junior and Pauline worked the family farm bordering the Licking River below Cave Run Lake and raised 3 sons. Pauline valued books and education, and saw to it that her sons all went to college and became successful engineers.
After the death of her husband, her later years were spent on her farm, with her dog Lucky, reading, taking walks, keeping up with family and being with her friends in the area.
She was a member of the Salt Lick Freewill Baptist church while her parents were living and elders there. Later, with her husband, she was a member of Lakeview Community Church, Salt Lick, KY.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Richard Alley and siblings, Gordon Sorrell, Zelma Hager, Mary Helen Creech and Sherwood Sorrell.
Survivors include her sons, Randall Alley of Plano, TX and Rodney Alley, his wife Florita and their children Isabella and Benjamin of Albany, OR. Also surviving is her youngest brother, Donald Sorrell and his wife Eythel of Valrico, FL and a great many Sorrell nieces and nephews and their offspring.
A graveside memorial service will be held Saturday July 3, 2021 at 11:00 AM at Carey Cemetery with Rev. Eddie Dennison officiating.
